This paper presents the various options for treating wastewater from small communities or developments. Primary, secondary and tertiary treatment components are described and then combined in typical options. The expected effluent quality and maintenance requirements of these options are presented. Also discussed are current issues faced when setting up a small community treatment system and an example showing the benefits of consultation.
